{"id":573,"date":"2012-02-10T00:44:53","date_gmt":"2012-02-10T00:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.quiliby.com\/all\/?p=573"},"modified":"2012-02-10T00:44:53","modified_gmt":"2012-02-10T00:44:53","slug":"ifetayo-black-truth-rhythm-band","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.quiliby.com\/all\/ifetayo-black-truth-rhythm-band.html","title":{"rendered":"Ifetayo &#8211; Black Truth Rhythm Band"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>David Lewis reviews the release of <em>Ifetayo<\/em> album of the 1970s Trinidadian musical aggregation, Black Truth Rhythm Band, for <em>Black Grooves<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blackgrooves.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/ifetayo.jpg\"><img src='https:\/\/www.quiliby.com\/all\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ifetayo-200x200.jpg' alt='' \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Title:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ifetayo-Black-Truth-Rhythm-Band\/dp\/B0060E9E2U\/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1325290108&amp;sr=1-1\">Ifetayo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Artist:\u00a0 Black Truth Rhythm Band<\/p>\n<p>Label:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soundwayrecords.com\/\">Soundway Records<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Formats:\u00a0 CD, LP, MP3<\/p>\n<p>Release date: \u00a0December 6, 2011<\/p>\n<p>Soundway Records, a label that is invested in re-releasing vintage music from the Global South, has found a gem in this 1976 album that, at the time, made very little impact.\u00a0 The Black Truth Rhythm Band, an Afro-centric Trinidadian group, was formed in 1971 but made only one recording before disbanding, though Oluko Imo?the band leader who plays multiple instruments here?went on to record with Fela Kuti.\u00a0 The band formed and released <em>Ifetayo<\/em> in the midst of the Black Power Movement in Trinidad and, along with performers like Lancelot Layne and Cheryl Byron, responded to the African-centered vibe of the movement in their music, making liberal use of African-style drumming and instruments like the mbira.\u00a0 The album is not simply an African fusion album, though; the band skillfully weaves music from many traditions through a soul and funk-tinged set of tracks.\u00a0 The title track, \u201cIfetayo,\u201d is deliciously funky and falls into a drum and flute break that sounds decidedly West African.\u00a0 \u201cKilimanjaro\u201d ends with an up-tempo Latin American guitar break.\u00a0 The band also incorporates steelpan, the national instrument of Trinidad, as an integral part of the group (not simply a flourish to pander to tourists) in \u201cSave D Musician\u201d and \u201cUmbala.\u201d\u00a0 Further emphasizing their Trinidadian roots, \u201cAspire\u201d is a decidedly funked-up calypso beat, and \u201cSave D Musician\u201d has a calypso-like shuffle and lyrics that address social issues, like any good calypso song.<\/p>\n<p>Following is the official promo video featuring the track \u201cSave D Musician\u201d:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qbHN-3SkgFc\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Since this album is a re-issue, listeners have to be invested in the early 1970s sound, but if you are, it\u2019s a strong album that deserved much more attention than it received initially.\u00a0 The album also pre-figured a number of developments in Trinidadian music, including the African-influenced music of rapso artists like Brother Resistance and 3canal, and the current Trinidad-based world fusion band Terrenaisance.\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Ifetayo<\/em> is currently available from Soundway in three formats: an MP3 download and CD,\u00a0 both of which contain a bonus track, or, for purists, an LP with a 7\u201d disc containing the bonus track.<\/p>\n<p>For the original post:<a href=\"http:\/\/blackgrooves.org\/?p=7290\"> Ifetayo | blackgrooves.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Lewis reviews the release of Ifetayo album of the 1970s Trinidadian musical aggregation, Black Truth Rhythm Band, for Black Grooves.
